Every Room Should Have a Little Bit of Black

Designers say that every room should have a little bit of black.  I think it has something to do with giving the eye a place to rest, or something like that.

{But not big and ugly giant black boxes.}

Warning:  This is a very scary post.

I love Mr. Art @ Home.    Truly, I must because I put up with his collection of big black boxes. Can I participate in all the fun autumn mantel parties?

Photobucket

No.

Can I enjoy the view from my kitchen to the keeping room without seeing one?

Photobucket

Photobucket

No, not really.

Is our bedroom off limits to big {ugly} back boxes?

Photobucket

Photobucket

Nope, and....

Photobucket

Photobucket

Uh-uh.

Photobucket

But at least I found a way to cover up one of the uglies.

So tell me, have I let Mr. Art @ Home's obsession with all things large and electronic ruin our home?  Any suggestions on what I can do?  :/

{I would appreciate any words of wisdom you care to share.}

Until next time...

Blessings!
Ricki Jill

  1. They are an absolute pain I agree! In our current house we have actually not put one in the living room or downstairs at all! Easy to do with no children at home, also we are not daytime TV viewers. Our bedroom is big enough that it has a sitting area and we watch there, even has an open fire for cosy winter evenings. Perfect, though our Italian friends find it very odd!!

  2. Cara Ricki,io odio la tecnolgia in nero!Mi rovina l'arredamento!Per fortuna i miei televisori sono grigi.Hai avuto una bella idea di nascondere la tv dietro gli sportelli!Ciao e baci,Rosetta

  3. You found a beautiful way to conceal the bedroom TV...sooo pretty! I've seen on HGTV how they frame in around the TV and then attach doors that you can open. You are a such a talented artist...you could paint the doors with one of your beautiful creations and just open when he is wanting to watch it. Possibly then add wall sconces on the sides of the "picture" leaving the top of your mantle free & clear; until of course you want to drape some garland for Christmas, Fall, etc... :)

  4. Nothing is ruined. You have made your home comfortable to both of you. I can see your touches in every picture you showed. At the end of the day your rooms have to be functional as well as beautiful. I think you've done a marvelous job. If it makes you feel any better I have a huge black box over my mantel too. I have just sighed at all the fall mantels. Oh well...

  5. Oh girl I think we are all right there with you. And they seem to be getting bigger and bigger don't they? But I have to say, you've done a fabulous job of covering yours up! Gorgeous!

  7. I don't have an answer for you. I don't claim to understand men at all. (Which is probably why I'm getting divorced.) But you sure do make yours look classy.

  9. Ricki Jill,

Create a work of art with a wide box stretcher to hang over the darn things when not turned on! Ha! That will surprise him!

I have linked up with Laura's Fall in Love with Your House Party!

  11. Ricki, your home is so lovely I doubt anyone sees the black box. You have so many beautiful things and you decor is gorgeous. I think you've figured out how to hide the box, just make the house so beautiful you don't notice.

  13. Oh man, I know what you mean. In all the inventions & improvements in this world, why has no one thought of a way to make a TV not look like a big black box? It's a decorating nightmare, but don't feel bad Ricki Jill, we all have them & I think we're just stuck with them.

  14. I saw on HGTV a segment where they mounted a piece of glass in front of the TV. It was a mirror when the TV was off and just clear when the tv was on. Sounds like magic to me, but I thought it helped with the disguising a bit.

  15. Boys and their toys. I saw this neat slider type deal where they had artwork big enough to cover it and the tracks were right on the mantel.

I know you could do a gorgeous pic if you wanted but couldn't begin to tell you the mechanics of it.

I am in love with minis (as in Ipods w/the small but seriously excellent speaker systems etc) but I think guys are hardwired to think bigger is better no matter what. LOL

  19. I am totally with you there!! My hubs likes to watch shows on his laptop so the lovely man he is puts it on one of the kitchen chairs right in front of the couch. But then his speakers on said laptop are not very loud so he gets this chunky old radio and plugs that into his laptop and sets it in another chair right in front of the couch. And if that isn't bad enough he can't plug everything in to the outlet that is right next to him he must go get a drop cord. I call this his "personal entertainment center" You can literally feel the electromagnetic smog billowing into the room! LOL This is such a GREAT post. I am so glad I am not alone. Personally I could live with my laptop and my ipod and be completely happy. :) Blessings!

  20. Hi lovely,

Uggh! I think we are all in the same boat. I love 'em but I hate 'em. They're so ugly...but so lovely to watch!! I hide my tv in a cupboard that we've adapted for use. I like the way it's hidden...unless we're watching, in which case we just open the doors and taaa-daaah!!

  22. Hi Ricki Jill,
There are so many pretty treasures in both rooms to look at that I hardly even noticed the big black boxes :-) I think if they came in different colors like...WHITE...those darn things wouldn't be such a headache to decorate around. Hee, hee, hee! Anyway, love the piece you used to cover the one in your bedroom. Where on earth did you find that? Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

    Hugs and Kisses,
    ♥Ana

  23. I hear you! I just took some photos of the Halloween stuff in my living room and I can't escape the big black box sitting on the open cabinet with the TIVO, HD box and surround sound stuff. I will admit that I watch it as much as my hubby. However, I don't even go down to the basement where the 2 couches, 1 loveseat, 1 recliner, 1 giant old big screen ugly tv AND a regular tv create the perfect man cave!

  24. Ruined, never! They are what they are. You found a lovely way to decorate with and around them.Hugs and sincere wishes for a weekend filled with joy, Katherine

  25. Love the way you hid your bedroom t.v.- it's beautiful! I have a thing about seeing media too-it is a pet peeve of mine- so I hear you! I saw a two sided mirror with a t.v. hidden behind it in a magazine a few years back- you could only see the t.v. when it was on. Ingenious! :)

  26. I know what you mean! It's so tough to hide them but you've done a great job. Getting caught up on your blog this weekend!

  27. I just had this conversation with my significant other last night. I cannot believe I agreed to getting a new one...finally. I have held on to our old TV forever but last night I gave in. So...nope, I have no advice since I am obviously one of the losers.
