Literary Friday: Gracious Spaces

I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Gracious Spaces by Phyllis Hoffman. As you probably know, Phyllis Hoffman is the editor and publisher of Southern Lady Magazine, and she made so many of us happy when she brought back Victoria Magazine. This book reflects her style, elegance, and attention to detail that we have come to expect from her stunning magazines. Gracious Spaces is such a treat! Although it has been out since 2009, I had not read it until recently. The book is so inspirational, and it's practical. Journal pages and recipes are included, and the photography is breathtaking.

Two of the larger sections in the book are entitled "Enchanting Details" and "Artful Embellishments." Although many styles are represented in the book, Hoffman is definitely an anglophile at heart. The English are so astute at adding lovely finishing details to their designs, and this book illustrates this tradition beautifully. Like the accessories we wear, our rooms' finishing touches are what make them unique and reveal much about the personalities who inhabit them. I was so inspired by the "Put it in Writing" pages with its gorgeous writing desk and antique desk accoutrements that I decided to use my tiny secretary for correspondence. I do agree with Hoffman that personal, hand-written letters should be valued and treasured.

I love all the little cubbies in this desk. There is a tiny little pen holder to the right of the small drawer (you can barely see it).

My Favorite Vignette

My favorite vignette? It is not that pretty. One reason is that we do not have much surface area in our house for vignettes because we have an open-concept floor plan with very few walls and tons of windows. But it is my favorite because I enjoy painting in our studio!

Read this book with your daughters, and then read the classics if you've never read them!

My Happy List #45

My Happy List has a theme this week:

It's All Greek to Me! :D

1. My mother and I attended Zeta Day this past weekend. It was fun and loud! The young ladies were not shy about showing their Zeta love.

One of the highlights for me was seeing the actual silver chain of Zeta chapters. Usually it is on display at the national headquarters, so it was a treat to see it in person here in Alabama.

We were served a strawberry dessert, of course! Strawberries were served at the very first Zeta social.

One of the main reasons I remain active in my sorority is our philanthropy. I have had several friends develop breast cancer, and they are all the encouragement I need to support the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation.

Zeta's partners include the NFL and Yoplait yogurt.

Raising funds and awareness for breast cancer makes me very happy! I am proud to be a Zeta!

2. Our daughter's sorority is hosting a philanthropy event with my husband's fraternity. Mr. Art @ Home will definitely be there! She even bought Mr. Art @ Home a t-shirt for the event. She is so cute to think of her daddy!

A pocket on the front of a fraternity t-shirt is called a frocket! ;P

Are you Greek? Are you still active as an alumna in your sorority? Our local chapter keeps us busy, and I was so proud and in awe of how much money and awareness our local Zeta chapters have raised for breast cancer.

Cooking With Jazz

Mr. Art @ Home made another pretty frame from reclaimed antique pine that was submerged in Mobile bay at one time. He made it to frame a fun New Orleans Cooking With Jazz poster for the kitchen. I love it!

Sorry about the quality of the photo...the glass made it difficult!

There was not much cooking going on around here over the weekend. But Mr. Art @ Home did bring home some crawfish from Rouses in New Orleans. We had many fun activities and functions, so it was crazy busy! I will post about some of them tomorrow. Today, I need to get caught up on work. I will visit y'all tonight in between homework and watching Ben swoon over that crazy Courtney on The Bachelor.

Literary Friday: Big Art, Small Canvas

I have been reading the best books lately, but some of them have been a wee bit inappropriate for my blog, and I have even put some of them down and stopped reading them. It was difficult enough to write a post about Shantaram last week, so this week I am going to share a nonfiction book I have been enjoying: Big Art Small Canvas by Joyce Washor.

Washor is an artist who prefers small canvases, and I mean tiny: 3" X 4". She truly does an amazing job explaining the process of how to paint small. Her process begins with color theory and how to select subjects for still life paintings. She even gives step by step instructions on how to set-up your own still life in your studio or work area.

I have enjoyed this book so much, and I appreciate the practical advice. Washor even shares her best resources for framing! I have ordered some frames, and I look forward to receiving them and framing my tiny canvases. I will probably give these to Shanley for her apartment My only complaint is her paint. I use Gamblin paint exclusively, and she uses mostly Winsor & Newton. The colors' names are not the same, so I had to wing it. I do use Winsor & Newton brushes. They are my favorite!

Using Washor's instructions, I painted two still life paintings:

I like the pitcher and vase in this one...not sure about the orange slice and the pepper.

The orb in front is an orange, the one in back is a yellow onion. Two roses are in the foreground.

Can you believe that they are only 3" X 4"? These are not the paintings I wrote about in yesterday's post. I am working on two other larger canvases and I will share them when they are finished. Next week, I will set-up a still life in my studio and try Washor's techniques.

I might write about two or three books next week, one fiction and three nonfiction. Next week's post will probably be long!

1. Here are my all-time favorite picks for nail color:

Nothing in my life ever really matches. Well, rarely.....

2. Yes. I might get a mani/pedi once, maybe twice a year, but not very often. I spend too much money on my hair! When I do get my nails done, I like to use OPI's "I'm Not Really A Waitress" red.

Got to love this classic red!

3. I have my hair colored at an Aveda salon. Their color lasts longer, and it is not as harsh on my hair. Right now I have light blonde, copper, and stop sign red highlights. I think your hair should look like it has been colored if you pay for it. If you want your hair to look "natural," then leave it alone! Do not color it. ;P

Right now I have all three highlights in my hair. My natural hair color is a dark strawberry blonde, and is very close to the first copper color.

4. Yes, I have had facials, but I have to be careful with them because I have incredibly sensitive skin. I have used the Clinique 3-step system since I was thirteen, and my skin is in pretty good condition. I also use Oil of Olay's Complete daily Moisturizer (with SPF) for Sensitive Skin.

5. Let's see....inject a dangerous toxin that close to my brain? I *so* don't think so. That's why I have bangs!

6. Yes, Virginia: all of these things exist! ;P But seriously, the most important things for your skin are exfoliation and sunscreen everyday. I do not use anti-aging moisturizers. If my skin is very dry to to skiing or some other reason, I might add Clinique's Moisture Surge on top of the three step program. I rarely buy it because it is usually in those free gifts when I buy the other products.

Happy Mardi Gras!

My Happy List

1. My violas and pansies are so pretty and purple (and yellow) for Mardi Gras! I also planted some pretty pericallis in shades of purple and white. Pretty springtime flowers make me happy!

I am loving the pericallis!

2. Speaking of flowers, I bought these daisies from the $1.99 bin at the grocery store, and they looked so pitiful. I revived them with some warm water and aspirins. Aren't they pretty! Bargains make me so happy!

3. Mr. Art @ Home went on a quest to find me the twentieth anniversary edition of Outlander for my Valentine's Day present. He had to visit three different stores. He could not understand why I wanted it because I have already read it, but the special edition has a CD of the musical in the back. :D

Then, on Friday night, he took my by the bookstore and bought me another book:

New books make me very happy!

4. While my family eats King Cake today for Mardi Gras, I will be enjoying a tasty treat, too: Pumpkin Pudding. Please don't gag. We made it last week in cooking class, and no one was thrilled about it, until we tasted it. Seriously, it was one of the favorite dishes of the day, and it is healthy! Yummy and healthy desserts make me happy!

Pumpkin Pudding
(serves 8)

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups pumpkin puree, canned or fresh
2 large eggs
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamon
2 cups skim milk (I used 2%)
2/3 cup orange juice
Whipped topping, if desired

Procedure:

1. Beat pumpkin and eggs in a large heavy saucepan. Combine cornstarch, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cardamon in a medium bowl and stir into the pumpkin mixture. Add milk and juice.

2. Cook over medium heat, whisking continuously. Be sure to get the corners where lumps can hide until the pudding is very thick, about ten minutes.

3. Reduce the heat and give the pudding a few quick whisks to remove any lumps. Divide among 8 ramekins. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until chilled, about two hours. Add a small amount of whipped topping if desired.

133 calories; 2g fat; 1g saturated fat; 4 g protein; 26 g carbohydrates; 58mg sodium; 2 g fiber

5. Check out this sky today! Pretty walking weather, so I am putting on my Pumped Up Kicks and I am walking this afternoon! YAY! Walking makes me happy and in shape!

6. Look at who I spotted in our backyard! He is out of hibernation, so spring must be right around the corner. I love spring because it means the end of winter. Springtime makes me happy!

Musical Monday: Best Performance from the Grammys

We listen to lots of Taylor Swift around here because our fourteen year old daughter, Shelley, loves her. I like her, too, and I think that Shelley could not have chosen a better role model. Watch her performance at this year's Grammy Awards, and notice her reaction at the end when she receives a standing ovation:

I love this song. It reminds me of when Shanley Belle (our nineteen year old) was thirteen and in middle school. There was a girl in our neighborhood who was nasty and mean to her. We were telling an elderly friend about this mean girl when she walked into the restaurant where we were eating lunch. This sweet lady looked at the girl, her eyes got really large, and she said: "That is the mean girl? SERIOUSLY? I thought that she must be pretty. Why, good heavens! She isn't pretty enough to be THAT mean!!!"

We laughed so hard we cried. So now whenever anyone is mean at Shelley's middle school, she just shakes her head, and says, "I'm sorry...but you aren't pretty enough to be that mean!"

Quite a Transformation

I have been meaning to post photos of Shanley's sorority house. It is simply stunning since Matt Clinton redecorated it. He is so talented; he did an amazing job with the Delta Zeta house. I only wish he had been chosen to redecorate my sorority house!

Literary Friday: Shantaram

For the past two weeks, I have been reading Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Shantaram is the Dixie Diva Book Club's January selection. I would have never chosen this book on my own, but that is why I belong to a book club because it challenges me through reading books out of my comfort zone. My life has been enriched by reading Shantaram because it made me think about what is truly important in life. It also made me so thankful for my faith. It is a thriller with plenty of culture, humor, and romance. Gregory David Roberts is an extremely talented writer, and it was well worth reading the book's {over} 900 pages.

The protagonist in the story is Lin, an escaped convict from an Australian maximum security prison. With the help from friends and a fake New Zealand passport, Lin escapes to Bombay. As a tourist, he travels to a small village and becomes fluent in Marathi. On his way back to Bombay, thieves steal all his money so he is forced to live in one of the city's slums where he starts a medical clinic for the thousands of people living there. Eventually he meets Bombay's mafia boss and works for him, mostly in currency exchange and document forgery. The mafia boss, an Afghan, recruits Lin to accompany him on a weapons running expedition to his home country for the Jihad against the Soviets. Lin is a likable character in spite of some of his decisions. His mores are very complicated and questionable, and a big part of this book discusses the philosophical question of good versus evil. I was devastated when he succumbs to heroine, the cause of his downfall in Australia. His time spent in the opium den is heartbreaking and difficult to read. Still, I found myself rooting for Lin because he really does "get it" when it comes to what is truly important. He prefers to live simply (not that he always does), and he has a serving heart which is evident during a severe cholera outbreak in the slum. I find his sense of duty and honor quite humbling.

There are several other characters in the book I enjoyed. Lin's first Indian friend and tour guide, Prabaker, takes him home to his village and accepts him like a family member. Prabaker's mile-wide smile and positive outlook on life in spite of his poverty touched me. I would love to have a friend like Prabaker! Didier, an ex-pat from France, is witty; he is the glue that keeps their little social group at Leopold's Cafe together. And then there is the enigmatic Karla. Lin falls in love with Karla at first sight, and she introduces Lin to many contacts in Bombay.

But the true star of Shantaram is Bombay (Mumbai). I learned so much about the city's people, culture, and atmosphere. I had never before desired to travel to India. Shantaram has changed my mind. Someday I would love to visit Mumbai. Shantaram is truly a love story: Roberts' love for Mumbai. I do want to warn you that there is violence in this book, and very bad language. There is an Indian slang phrase that is very offensive and used often in the book.

Decorating for Mardi Gras

Today I replaced all the hearts and lovebirds with Mardi Gras decorations. I hated for my Fourteen Days of Love to end, and I appreciate y'all's positive comments about it!

I am not crazy about the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold. I decided to go with a very neutral centerpiece in the breakfast room so it would not compete with the place mats and linens.

The Mardi Gras print is from my sister in law's company, M & L Nostalgia. I think the pillow, coasters, and table runner are all so, so cute.

This has been a busy week with several meetings and appointments. I cannot wait until this afternoon when I get to blog jog with no interruptions. I might even turn off my phone!

“The Song of Wandering Aengus”

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,

And moth-like stars were flickering out,

There is much to love about this poem, but I won't bore you with an analysis. But I will tell you that it is classified as an aisling. Pronounced "ashling", it means dream, or vision. This genre of lyrical poetry usually contains a woman who serves as a metaphor for the speaker's homeland. In this particular poem, the speaker of the poem sees the spirit of Ireland as a beautiful, ethereal woman.

4. Smart Wool Socks are the best socks on the planet. It has turned downright cold here in Central Alabama (winter finally arrived), and I am so thankful that I have lots of Smart Wool Socks. Having warm feet makes me so happy!

Romantic Valentine's Day Dinner

Day #13: Valentine's Day Dinner

I had plans, BIG plans, for a romantic dinner for Mr. Art @ Home, in the dining room, decorated something like this:

My husband has been traveling extensively this past month. When I offered to cook him an extravagant Valentine's Day dinner with beef tenderloin, homemade rolls, and his choice of dessert, he said, "No, thank you." Instead, Mr. Art @ Home wants a simple meal of grilled chicken, salad, and nice white rice. :/ Apparently there is no white rice in Colorado, and he is craving it! ;P

At least I can make the salad special. As you all know, I am taking a cooking class this month, and this recipe is from the class. Enjoy!

Spinach Salad with Japanese Ginger Dressing

INGREDIENTS
3 tablespoons minced onion
3 tablespoons sesame oil
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
1 1/2 tablespoons finely grated fresh ginger
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 tablespoon reduced-sodium soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper, to taste
10 ounces fresh spinach, (see Note)
1 large carrot, grated
1 medium red bell pepper, very thinly sliced
red pepper flakes to taste

PREPARATION
Combine onion, oil, vinegar, ginger, ketchup, soy sauce, garlic, salt and pepper in a blender. Process until combined.
Toss spinach, carrot and bell pepper with the dressing in a large bowl until evenly coated.
Add red pepper flakes to taste.

NUTRITION
Per serving: 135 calories; 11 g fat ( 2 g sat , 5 g mono ); 0 mg cholesterol; 9 g carbohydrates; 3 g protein; 3 g fiber; 407 mg sodium; 559 mg potassium.

Big Sis came home for a visit, and she wanted to have some tea with a treat. I had planned on baking heart-shaped scones, but Shanley had a better idea. She loves Glamour Magazine, and she read about some healthy alternatives to rice crispy treats. They turned out delicious, and we decided that they are a definite do-over!

We served it with rosehip and cherry tea.

I like to put fun things in the kids' lunch boxes for special days, and I found some neat Valentine surprises recently at our local five and dime.

Got to *love* the Diva Sweethearts! The scratch and sniff stickers by Peaceable Kingdom will make any chocolate lover smile.

Pez! Pez candies are so much fun! I have already tasted a Valentine lolly by the Hammond Candy Company. Hammond makes some of the most delicious candies in the world, and I always buy some for my grandmother for Christmas.

All ready to place in a lunchbox or backpack!

Literary Friday: The Most Romantic Book Series {ever}

Day #10: The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon

My favorite book series of all time is the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. If you have not read this series, you are truly missing out on an epic story. There are seven books in the series so far, and each one is about 900 pages or more. I read the first five books during a summer, and I literally got nothing else done because I could not put the books down. My poor family starved. ;P

The series begins after World War II. Claire Beachamp, a British nurse, has recently been reunited with her husband, Frank Randall. They are on their second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands when Claire is drawn to a group of ancient standing stones. As Claire approaches the stones, she hears an ear-piercing noise. Suddenly she is being pulled through the stones. She soon discovers through a series of odd events that she has traveled two hundred years into the past. The first odd event is an encounter with the cruel commander of Fort Williams, Captain Black Jack Randall, who looks identical to her husband, Frank. A young Highlander named James Fraser rescues Claire, and in order to protect her from the Evil Captain Randall, he must quickly marry her.

Jamie and Claire's romance is my favorite love story. Their love literally spans centuries. During the aftermath of Culloden, Jamie forces a pregnant Claire back to the future so that she and their baby will not starve. Eventually, Claire travels back through the stones to Jamie once their daughter is grown, and they immigrate to the United States just in time for the Revolutionary War. The saga of Jamie and Claire's extraordinary lives, Diana Gabaldon's acute attention to research, and the historical context and settings make this book series worth the effort of reading it. Perhaps one of my favorite books in the series is A Dragonfly in Amber when Jamie and Claire are at the French court with other Jacobites waiting for the chance to restore Bonny Prince Charlie to the Scottish throne.

An Echo in the Bone had a triple cliffhanger. It has been agony waiting on the eighth book of Claire and Jamie's story entitled Written in My Heart's Own Blood, a work in progress which will probably be released in early 2013. I hope that my heart can stand the wait!

But while I wait, I would love to get a copy of the twentieth anniversary edition of Outlander.
It includes a new essay, a new map, a CD with Outlander the musical, and more.

Mr. Art @ Home: Are you paying attention? This would be a thoughtful and much-appreciated Valentine's Day present! ;P

Day #9: What cures the Valentine's Day blues? Cupcakes! But, of course!

This post is for all the single ladies. Valentine's Day can be depressing, especially if you have recently broken-up with your boyfriend. But there is hope....and *chocolate* :D

As some of you know, I love Dreamcakes cupcakes. Love them. I will eat a little of one in spite of the fact that they are not gluten free. They are worth the risk on occasion!

I decorated the dining room for a little friend's birthday party.

Then I visited Dreamcakes to buy birthday cupcakes, but I got very sidetracked by the hilarious Valentine cupcakes!

Here is a sampling of some of the special Valentine's cupcakes for the month of February. I love the names of some of these: They remind me of OPI nail polish. I do buy nail polish, on occasion, based on its name, and apparently I do the same thing when buying cupcakes!

STUPID CUPID:
Strawberry cake topped with chocolate buttercream & a fresh strawberry. Give it up for the chubby baby with the arrows.
Cupid really is stupid on occasion!

PEANUT BUTTER CUP:
Devil’s food cake filled with chocolate ganache & topped with creamy peanut butter buttercream, a chocolate drizzle & a peanut butter cup candy. Scientifically regarded as proof of a higher power.
Peanut butter and chocolate is a match made in heaven!

FIRST KISS:
Chocolate cake with a hidden Hershey’s Kiss inside, topped with cherry-vanilla whipped cream & a real cherry on top. Way more delicious than that first 7th grade kiss.
I would have to agree....

SECRET ADMIRER:
Chocolate cake with a hidden topping of raspberry buttercream, dipped in ganache.
The ganache has sparkles in it, too!

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE:
Light & fluffy angel food cake, topped with real whipped cream & fresh strawberries.
Truly heavenly!

SWEET CHEEKS:
Buttery chocolate chip cake topped off with vanilla buttercream, a chocolate chip cookie, & sprinkles. It’s two treats in one!
LOL guaranteed to increase the girth of your cheeks!

IRISH CAR BOMB:
Guinness beer chocolate cake topped with irish creme frosting. It’s the luck of the Irish!
Yet another sarcastic choice along with the Stupid Cupid. Please note, Shanley Belle: this one will only work on an ex who has a car and a license! ;P

TURTLE:
Rich chocolate cake with a caramel filling, topped with chocolate buttercream, a caramel & chocolate drizzle, & dusted with toasted pecans.
Turtle power!

HUNKA HUNKA BURNIN’ LOVE:
In tribute to the King, a mix of his favorites: moist banana cake with peanut butter buttercream, crispy pieces of bacon, a drizzle of chocolate, & a sprinkle of salt. Don’t be cruel.
Yeah, you stupid boys...don't be cruel....

CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE:
Chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache filling inside, dipped in ganache, & dusted with a powdered sugar heart. A sweet for your sweetie!
...or a cure for the stupid boys that Stupid Cupid pairs you with!

ROMEO RED VELVET:
Our perfectly moist red velvet cake, topped with cream cheese frosting & red sprinkles. Where for art thou, cupcake?
We can forgive the fact that this yummy cupcake is named after yet another stupid boy.

I bought these cupcakes to celebrate a sweet little neighborhood friend's birthday (Happy Birthday, Reed!), and to make Shanley Belle feel better.

I bought (starting at the top and moving clockwise): Secret Admirer, Strawberry, Wedding Cake, Stupid Cupid, Peanut Butter Cup, and Romeo Red Velvet in the center.

Here is our birthday girl, Reed, singing and playing the ukelele. Reed is rocking her new braces! I cannot believe how much you have grown, Sweet Girl. I have known you since you were two years old!

I hope that your Valentine's Day {and beyond} is free from stupid boys!

Dinner and a Movie

Day #8: Dinner and a Movie

I want to treat Mr. Art @ Home to dinner and a movie at home. We will eat our meal at the coffee table while we watch the movie. One of my favorite movies is Amelie, so I will be cooking French recipes, including Julia Child's recipe for coq au vin.

Menu:

Coq au vin
Egg Noodles
Macaroons
Popcorn

Julia Child's Coq au Vin

INGREDIENTS
1/2 lb bacon slices
20 pearl onions, peeled, or 1 large yellow onion, sliced
3 lbs chicken thighs and legs, excess fat trimmed, skin ON
6 garlic cloves, peeled
Salt and pepper to taste
2 cups chicken stock
2 cups red wine (pinot noir, burgundy, or zinfandel)
2 bay leaves
Several fresh thyme sprigs
Several fresh parsley sprigs
1/2 lb button mushrooms, trimmed and roughly chopped
2 Tbsp butter
Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

METHOD
1 Blanch the bacon to remove some of its saltiness. Drop the bacon into a saucepan of cold water, covered by a couple of inches. Bring to a boil, simmer for 5 minutes, drain. Rinse in cold water, pat dry with paper towels. Cut the bacon into 1 inch by 1/4 inch pieces.
2 Brown bacon on medium high heat in a dutch oven big enough to hold the chicken, about 10 minutes. Remove the cooked bacon, set aside. Keep the bacon fat in the pan. Working in batches if necessary, add onions and chicken, skin side down. Brown the chicken well, on all sides, about 10 minutes. Halfway through the browning, add the garlic and sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper. (Note: it is best to add salt while cooking, not just at the very end. It brings out the flavor of the chicken.)
3 Spoon off any excess fat. Add the chicken stock, wine, and herbs. Add back the bacon. Lower heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for 20 minutes, or until chicken is tender and cooked through. Remove chicken and onions to a separate platter. Remove the bay leaves, herb sprigs, garlic, and discard.
4 Add mushrooms to the remaining liquid and turn the heat to high. Boil quickly and reduce the liquid by three fourths until it becomes thick and saucy. Lower the heat, stir in the butter. Return the chicken and onions to the pan to reheat and coat with sauce. Adjust seasoning. Garnish with parsley and serve.
Serves 6. Serve with potatoes or over egg noodles. Peas make a good side for this dish.

5. "Touch Me" by The Doors
This might seem like an unlikely choice due to the (implied) sarcasm of this song. Let's face it: it is typical for men to say what we want to hear in the heat of a fight. But it is Jim Morrison, and when he sings (accompanied by heavenly-sounding violins and a harpsichord) "I'm gonna love ya, till the heavens stop the rain. I'm gonna love you till the stars fall from the sky," I'm falling for it. Hook. Line. And sinker! There are some other odd interpretations of this song, but I choose to ignore them, too!

4. "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney
This song is special to me because Mr. Art @ Homes always says that it reminds him of me, and he sings it to me all the time. *le sigh* Got to love that man! :D

3. "Melt With You" by Modern English
Yet another odd choice. The lovers in this song seem to want to melt into each other (almost happily) as a nuclear attack seems imminent in their immediate future. But I am a child of the eighties, and we lived with the fear of the Cold War (until Ronald Reagan destroyed the iron curtain). I do not care how twisted this song is. I love it.

2. "Only Fools Rush In" by Elvis Presley
This is definitely my dog, Bonnie's, favorite song. It definitely wins points for romance lyrics wise, and the Hawaiian steel guitar lends an exotic beach sound that makes it the *perfect* love song.

1. "Baby I Love Your Way" by Peter Frampton
My favorite love song of all time, the highly visual imagery appeals to the artist in me. Moonlight (glows) with the help of fireflies, sunsets (reflected) in your eyes, and clouds stalking islands in the sun: You pick out any of these images and they are so, so full of romance. The urgency and impatience of the singer's love juxtaposed with the passages of time in this song is genius!

So what have I been listening to lately? "Maybe I'm Amazed."

Best Valentine Snack!

Day #5: Valentine's Day Coffee and Truffles

{This was meant to be yesterday's post.}

This post is for you, all of my sweet "bloggy" friends. I have had a very trying week. I try to keep my blog positive, but I want you all to know that most of what has transpired has been difficult and unexpected. My husband is having challenges with his schedule which affects Shelley and me; we have had neighbors and family in dire need of our help; Shanley has truly needed me this weekend, plus she needs help with a Panhellenic project; Shelley is registering for high school which requires a meeting with HS counselors; and I have had to attend an art workshop and a healthy living cooking class that were prepaid months ago (otherwise I would have cancelled both). I have neglected my blog, and I have definitely not had time to visit you. Plus, my computer had to visit the Genius Bar at the Apple Store. This has made me sad and stressed at the same time. You must know that there is something wrong if I have not posted a Literary Friday Post!

I want to thank you for your overwhelming generosity and kindness in writing to Holly. If you want more information, please click on the link at the top of my sidebar. You are all such special, loving ladies. You are a blessing to me as well as Holly. Because I love each and every single one if you, I wish I could invite you over for some Valentine's Day coffee: Chocolate Raspberry Kiss. And if that is not enough chocolate for you, how about some Lindor chocolate raspberry truffles? I truly wish you all lived close to me and could have coffee or tea with me. We would have so much fun chatting away!

Nothing expresses the language of love more than flowers. Primroses symbolize "I can't live without you," and white violets symbolize "let's take a chance on happiness." What a great combination of flowers for a marriage proposal, don't you think!

White violets are also special to me because they are my sorority's flower (Zeta Tau Alpha). I love my sisters!

Zeta's symbols include the crown, white violet, and strawberries.

I grow African violets in our home, and of course they are all usually white!

My favorite pet *ever* is Bonnie. She is such a love bug! Bonnie loves to sit in my lap; she forgets sometimes that she is a naughty terrier and not a lapdog! We adopted her when she was a wee pup because she had a heart condition, and she was going to be put down. We agreed to give her any heart surgeries she might need, and there was a 25% chance that she would outgrow her condition. She outgrew it, and she is as healthy as can be!

1. I would have to say none of the above. I would hire a chauffeur. Definitely, I would do this because I hate driving in Hwy 280 traffic!

2. My least favorite household chore is dusting blinds. I truly hate it.

3. I love to iron, and I iron everything. Ironing burns tons of calories, and it engages your core while you are doing it, so it is good for you!

Use a dryer sheet (it can be a used one) on your blinds after you've cleaned them. This helps to repel dust, and it truly works!

My Happy List #41

I do not have a long list this week, but that does not mean that I am not very happy. I am happy. But there are two things that have made me extra happy this week, and they are both making snack time fun.

My Happy List

1. Amy's gluten free shortbread cookies are fantastic! They are made with organic almond flour and are only 90 calories each. I can have two cookies with tea and have a delicious snack under a 200 calories. Shortbread I can eat makes me happy!

2. Starbucks has two new Blonde roasts called Veranda and Willow. They were giving away free samples of the Veranda last Thursday, and I tried it. I love the Veranda roast, and I will definitely brew it at home when I want something lighter than Cafe Verona. Free coffee makes me happy! Check out the video here.

While in Beaver Creek we shopped at Gorsuch Home. I have been a customer of Gorsuch since the 1970's, and I was thrilled several years ago when they opened a home store.

We bought this frame at Gorsuch Home. It was hand carved in France. Do you recognize the flowers on the frame? They are edelweisses!

Gorsuch also sells a lovely selection of MacKenzie-Childs, so I felt right at home shopping there!

This post is all about pretty romantic rooms. I have posted a couple of these rooms before, but I think they are worth viewing again.

I love the pink and pale pine floors in this living room from Better Homes & Gardens Magazine.

Our dining room was painted this shade of ballet slipper and I miss it...from Country Living Magazine.

The lovely shades of gray and white in this kitchen are drool worthy. The fluted apron-front sink is stunning, too. Even without the staging, this kitchen is so, so pretty.

Literary Friday: Creative Walls

This week I have been reading two books: Creative Walls by Geraldine James, and Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Shantaram is over 900 pages, so I have not quite finished reading it. I will post about it next Friday.

I enjoyed Creative Walls. {Mostly.} I do not know why I tortured myself reading this book because we have very little wall space in our home. I would love to incorporate some of the creative ideas so beautifully photographed in this book on our {few} walls. One of my favorite chapters in the book is Children's and Students' Spaces: It was loaded with truly creative and affordable ideas. Shanley will be living in an apartment next year at college, and I think she will find inspiration in this chapter.

Ideas I Love in Creative Walls

3. Pretty vintage bottles from the collectibles chapter
4. Postcards and greeting cards displayed behind a vintage vanity

This image is from my copy of the book. It is one of my favorite ideas and photos. I would love to paint it one day!

What I did not care for: the overabundance of dead animals and dead animal parts on walls throughout the book. I did a quick count, and I counted at least 43 pages out of 224 that have dead animal parts, mostly antlers. But there are also skulls, horns, skeletons, stuffed animals, and other specimens. One bar area had antlers and horns in graduated sizes with a menacing-looking stuffed swan standing guard over the bottles. I do not have anything dead in my house, including dried flowers. This is my only criticism, though. But please do not let this stop you from checking out Creative Walls. I think you will find it inspiring overall.

I cheated and bought the tray from Hobby Lobby. It came with a template which was helpful when it came time to cut out the paper to put in the tray. I wanted something to hold my collection of hearts.

{1} What is your favorite room in your house and why? Bonus points for a picture.

1. My favorite room in our home is our art studio, for obvious reasons!

2. My favorite time of day is early morning because it is when I am the most productive. I am a morning person!

3. I like all kinds of music, but I tend to listen to Alt Nation more than any other station. Lately I have been listening to Coldplay, The Black Keys, Foster the People, The Avett Brothers and Taylor Swift.

4. My favorite go to snack is popcorn. I love it! My second favorite is Fage fat free Greek yogurt with honey. I also keep honeycrisp apples for a quick snack.

5. I love to walk, just like Elizabeth Bennet! I have an elliptical for days I cannot walk due to my schedule or weather. I also like the hula hoop, but they are not like the ones we played with as kids. They are larger and much, much heavier. I am cross training ;P

The Witch Ball

Ginger from Small Town, U.S.A. sent me a witch ball for Christmas. It is so pretty, and I wanted to learn more about them.

The best site I found for information on the witch ball can be found here. The site is called Sunny Reflections, and they have some pretty artwork

The Witch Ball is used for protection against evil spells, witches, negativity, sickness, and ill fortune. Traditionally, Witch Balls are hung in an east window. However, any area around your home, whether in a window, porch, on a desk, or even outside in a garden, is a perfect spot to place a Witch Ball to ward off negative energy. They were also the precursors to the gazing ball, which are traditionally solid with a reflective surface. They reflect evil from our gardens.

Historically, Witch Balls have been around for over 600 years. They were first molded into sloppy spherical shapes in the Medieval times to ward off witches, goblins, and evil spirits. During Victorian times, Witch Balls were molded in a more refined shape and used higher quality glass and were displayed to declare prestige and wealth. The legend was discussed but regarded more as a superstition. Today, Witch Balls have become perfected in their shape and variety of colors to display beautifully as artwork or decorations, the belief of their magic and the true legend behind them is left for you to decide!

Traditionally, witch balls are either blue or green, with strands of colored glass within them. They can be as large as seven inches in diameter, and the pretty colors and strands of glass inside attract evil spirits. Once inside, the strands trap the spirits forever and they can no longer cause harm.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, this is the Tree of Love Inspirational Ball is from Kitras. Notice the strands of glass inside!

The first Christmas tree ornaments were actually witch balls. Folks did not want their friends and neighbors to be jealous of all the presents under their trees, so witch balls were placed on the branches to dispel their envy. I always find it interesting how pagan traditions and dates have been incorporated into the Christian calendar and traditions. These traditions were started by the Roman Emperor Constantine during the fourth century and continue to this day.

Ginger bought me a Kitras Art Glass Tree of Family ball. This is what the card attached to the ball says:

"There is no greater comfort in life then the unconditional love and support of family. Like the roots of a tree, family nourishes and encourages us to grow to limitless possibilities. The Tree of Family reminds us that no matter how far we branch out as individuals, our family is always there for support, for encouragement, and above all, for love."

I love the art of these balls, and I prefer the sentiment of the Inspiration Balls from the Kitras Company. My Tree of Family ball is hanging in our kitchen.

My Happy List #40

1. We are safe, and our home is intact. (See yesterday's post here.)

2. My children are thriving and working hard in school. Shanley Belle made the Dean's list, and she has been invited to join the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society. Shelley was awarded the Striving for Excellence in Reading Award at her middle school's academic awards assembly last Friday.

3. I have been using a new medium by Gamblin called Neo Megilp. I really like the way it suspends the paint on the canvas. I love Gamblin products, especially their paint colors.

While I sit here in the studio getting ready to start my day, I am so grateful we are safe, and we have no property damage. The sun is coming out, and I am thanking God we were spared. Tuscaloosa was spared, too, thankfully. I am also grateful for your sweet emails. Your concern for me and my family is so touching!

Central Alabama had another deadly tornado outbreak overnight and early this morning. Too many folks were not as fortunate as us. They could really use our prayers and positive thoughts this morning.

Debbiedoo's Copy Cat Challenge: Valentine's Edition

Forbidden Fruit

When I was trying to decide what to do for this month's copy cat challenge, I was looking through Victoria Magazine's Holiday Bliss Edition: and I fell in love with this photo.

I love it because it reminds me of an old Dutch master's painting. Legend says that the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden was the pomegranate, although the Bible does not mention the fruit's name. I love how the pomegranate is front and center in this still life. The lacy linen in the bowl is also very romantic, but I do not want to paint lace again any time soon.

Because the lace was so challenging, I did not paint the border on the bowl. I sort of don't like the design on it, and I just kept the black rim.

Literary Friday: Falling Together

This week I read Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos. This is the second book of hers I have read. You can read my post about Belong to Me here.

I tend to favor character-driven books. De los Santos's characters are so endearing, unique, and complex, yet the issues they face are universal. The three main characters in Falling Together meet the first day of college their freshman year. Penelope (Pen) Calloway, a tall, willowy beauty, leaves her English lecture in tears, not because of Beowulf's fate, but because her mascara is running down her face. She finds a pretty, fae-like girl named Cat having a seizure in the bathroom. Pen panics and grabs the first sweatshirt in the hallway and drags it into the ladies' room. The sweatshirt belongs to Will, and he takes charge of the situation and helps Cat. The three form a strong friendship that lasts throughout their college years.

Six years after graduation, Pen is living with her brother, Jamie. She is still dismayed that Will and Cat separately walked out on her shortly after graduation, and so much has transpired in the interim. Her father has died, and Pen has a five year old daughter. Cat grieves for all she has lost, and she is stunned and elated when Cat sends an email requesting Pen's attendance at their college reunion. When Pen and Will arrive on campus, Cat is a no-show, but her obnoxious husband is there. He influences Pen and Will to travel across the world with him.

The plot, partly told in flashback, builds to reveal why the best friends parted ways. To me, this story is personal and touching as friends come and go in and out of our lives. We graduate, move, marry, have children, change neighborhoods, churches, and play groups. But usually we do have what my friend Susan calls "touchstone friends." They are friends we had when we were young, and no matter what, no mater the distance, they are always there for us. That is why this novel moved me to tears. Pen, Cat, and Will should have remained touchstone friends, and I so badly yearned for a positive resolution while reading the book.

I highly recommend Falling Together. Marisa de los Santos writes about relationships better than anyone. You will not be disappointed in her books. But be forewarned: you might be compelled to call, email, google, or Facebook stalk college friends you have not heard from in years! ;P

How to Decorate Your Coffee Table

I read a neat article in Southern Living Magazine about how to decorate your coffee table written by designer Phoebe Howard. I thought I would give Phoebe's advice a try.

Here is Phoebe's design. Her formula is listed beside the photo in the article. You can click on the above Southern Living Magazine link and read it.

Here are three version of my coffee table following the same rules:

I think these look nice, but I think Phoebe was designing for a true living room and not a family room. Here are my issues:

1. A large basket of a dozen remote controls, and I only understand how to use two of them.

2. Coasters! We need coasters because we actually use our coffee table for...coffee and tea!

3. Library books: I like keeping my library books on the coffee table as a reminder to turn them in on time!

In reality, this is the best our coffee table will look. I am still following Phoebe's rules (loosely), it's just that the tall feature has been replaced by our basket of remotes, and the small sculptural object has been replaced by coasters.

My Happy List #39

I have had a great week. How about you? Sometimes it's the little things that make us happy, so my theme this week:

"It's the little things :D "

My Happy List

1. I love it when I go to the library and I am able to check out everything on my Wish List; that makes me so happy! That happened this week, and I cannot wait to dive into these wonderful books!

Doesn't this look like a fun book! We are wall challenged in this house, so I need all the help and inspiration I can get!

2. Speaking of books, Shanley Belle gave me one that I am looking forward to reading. It is about an artist, so she thought I would like it. :D I have read A Vintage Affair also by Isabel Wolff, and I highly recommend it, especially for beach reading! My daughter's kindness has made me so happy this week!

3. Shelley started her art class this week, and she painted the cutest abstract landscape on a tiny canvas. I love it! Shelley loves her class, which makes me very happy!

4. Normally I do not get *that* excited about frames, but when I find a frame that looks this great with a painting, it makes me incredibly happy!

5. Look at what I found on Ebay! I always wanted one of these versatile MacKenzie-Childs candlesticks because they are also bud vases. This item has been discontinued, plus it is in a more rare, discontinued pattern called Summer Frock. I dod not have many pieces in this pattern! Finding MacKenzie-Childs at very low prices makes me very happy!

My word for 2012: PLAN

I have many goals I want to accomplish this year in my art, spiritual life, and fitness. The only way I will be able to reach my goals is through planning. I am a list maker, and if I plan my time, I should be able to achieve my goals.

I am already organizing my life on my iPad, which is helping. I have also enrolled in a healthy cooking/menu planning class for February. I also have a pretty good weekly schedule for me, and Shelley's after school schedule is manageable for both of us.

House Plants That Clean the Air in Your Home

Today should be a nice day. Shelley and I will spend it drawing and painting in the art studio most of the day. At 3:00 we will be at the barn for Shelley's riding lesson. I hope Elmo is a good boy today like he was yesterday!

Due to the toxins in oil paint and oil paint mediums, I wanted to bring in some house plants that will help clean the air.

English Ivy and Chinese evergreen are two easy to maintain plants that will help purify the air in your home.

My favorite store in Beaver Creek is Karin's. I have shopped here for years as we spend {almost} every Christmas here in Beaver Creek.

I love the pretty lamps and alpine accessories in Karin's.

We love Susan Westwood's art. You can find many of Susan's paintings at Karin's. Susan paints lovely landscapes of Beaver Creek and her mother's farm which is located in England. This is the link to Susan's website; I hope you will visit and take a look at her gorgeous art!

Ice rink in Beaver Creek Village. Skating outside is one of my favorite things to do in Beaver Creek, next to skiing, of course!

I love draft horses!

We should have purchased this painting of a mountain stream.

We bought this painting entitled "All in a Row." Mr. Art @ Home loved the snow in the trees. We like to support local artists when we travel by purchasing their art.

Karin has two Westie babies, and I have known Millie for a very long time. She is adorable! I wish I could have taken a photo of her, but I missed seeing her this trip. I do have a photo of Millie's likeness. One of Karin's employees made the cutest floral arrangement in Millie's image.

Literary Friday: The Vintage Modern Home

I have been reading a couple of books this week, but I have not been able to put down The Vintage Modern Home by Katherine Sorrell. What a fantastic book! This book is one of my favorite Christmas gifts. I love the mixture of vintage and modern, and I have read many books on the subject. The reason I appreciate The Vintage Modern Home is because it is realistic for how we live today. One example (of many) would be from the Essentials section: There is a chapter entitled Technology. We are living in the 21st Century; technology is here to stay. Not only are there more than 310 stunning photos, the text is also helpful and well written.

The book's premise is that most of us cannot afford to decorate a home totally from scratch. We have inherited and collected pieces we love, and we do not want to part with them anyway. This book gives great tips for combining disparate decorative elements into a cohesive whole. The sections and chapters are very well organized, and the last section contains real rooms from real homes in a variety of different styles, from Classic Elegance, to Retro Colour and French Polish.

I would love to have a reading nook like this one!

You have to love a book that includes a chapter on pink accents!

There are lovely antiques in the book, and there are some great pointers for living with antiques.

Color Trends for 2012

I love interiors saturated in beautiful color. I also like keeping up with color trends. Here are three trends I found surfing the internet, and I would love your feedback.

Pantone's color if the year is tangerine tango. I have mixed emotions about this one, although I did hang a tangerine flower strewn wallpaper in our art studio.

Farrow & Ball introduced four color stories, and this is the one I like best:

I love the pretty Incarnadine and All White as accents to the Pigeon.

I also love Benjamin Moore paints: My home is full of them! Benjamin Moore's color of the year is Wythe Blue. I think it is so pretty! I also think it is very similar to Farrow & Ball's Pigeon. Honey wrote a fantastic post about Wythe blue. You can read it here.

Wythe blue is such a delicious color!

Sometimes I get overwhelmed with so many choices, so I took the color personality quiz @ BHG. You can take the quiz here. My results? Creamy latte. If I translated these colors into a bathroom, they might looks something like this:

I like it! The latte accents and white look pretty with the ballet slipper peachy pink.

I got bangs!

It looked much better before it got rained on :/

I got some blonde put in it, too. This past year I have gone from dark red, to golden blonde, to light blonde, to honey blonde, and now this copper/light blonde.

This is why I do not get a tattoo....I cannot even commit to a hair color!

Yes. And I do still have the letters ;P

Yes, much to my children's dismay.

This one is my favorite.

This one is nice, but it is twice the price as the other two listed, but I have received it as a gift.

This is my daughter's favorite. She swears by it! It is $12, and for her to spend her money on it, it must be worth it because she is very frugal, and she has very tender lips.

My family is driving me crazy, and all I want to do on this rainy day is nap.

First, my mom cooked a delicious pot roast last night for the "Big Game." Of course she shared it with me because I am such a good little pup. :D I love carrots, potatoes, roast, and gravy!

Then after the "Big Game," we all went out shopping for National Championship t-shirts. I did not get one, but I went along for the ride. At midnight....

Shelley had to get up for school at 6 AM. Then my mom fixed Shelley and me a delicious breakfast.

Now that my tummy is full and it is raining, I keep hearing this song over and over again.

Let me play it for you:

I think my mom keeps playing it because she is sad that my sister Shanley Belle has gone back to campus today. I am sad, full, and sleepy.

*sighs*

I wonder if Coco, Lucy, and Bentley are having some peace and quiet today....

We are finally getting back into a routine after the Christmas Holidays, and I could not be happier! I am also feeling so much better after my bout with food poisoning. Health and routine are such blessings!

My Happy List

1. Tornadoes ripped through our state on April 27, 2011; one devastated Tuscaloosa. The University of Alabama community rallied behind those affected, especially our football team. They humble me, and they truly are champions, both literally and figuratively. Alabama football always makes me happy, especially when we win. The Crimson Tide shut out LSU 21 - 0 for the BCS National Championship. This is the Crimson Tide's FOURTEENTH National Championship.

2. I won a sweet giveaway from Katherine's Corner. Winning giveaways always makes me so very happy! I think the Santa salt and pepper shakers are so cute, that I want to decorate my kitchen table around them next Christmas! Don't laugh; I was so overwhelmed during the holidays that I am already putting together a folder for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas 2012! *thank-you, Katherine*

3. I am enjoying the milder weather this winter in spite of the rain. I am taking more walks, and everyone's pansies are looking so pretty...even ours! Mild weather makes me happy! January is our coldest, rainiest, foggiest, and cloudiest month of the year here in Central Alabama, so the mild temps are making January so much more bearable.

BCS National Championship Prep

I am busy getting things ready to enjoy THE BIG GAME tonight. *ROLL TIDE* :D

We canceled our trip to New Orleans because I am still not feeling up to it, plus our oldest daughter has pneumonia. I am so sad, but I will enjoy watching the game here at home.

We took down our Christmas decor, and I decorated the family room in crimson and white.

I am also making everyone's favorite dip for the game adapted from the Neiman Marcus Pure & Simple cookbook. This dip is meant to be served hot.

Kevin's Artichoke Dip

Ingredients:
2 cans (14 ounces each) non-marinated artichoke hearts, drained well
1 cup Hellmann's olive oil reduced fat mayonnaise
1 cup freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano cheese
2 tablespoons Spice World chopped garlic
2 tablespoons sherry
Dash of cayenne
Dash of paprika

Directions:
Mix and mash the drained artichoke hearts, the mayonnaise, and the parmesan cheese with a fork. The mixture should be thoroughly mixed, but with a few lumps. Do not puree. Add garlic and sherry. Mix thoroughly. Put mixture in a small souffle or casserole dish, and top with a dash of cayenne and/or paprika. Bake uncovered 15 minutes at 300 degrees. I bet it will be gone before it cools down!

Serves 6 - 8

I suggest serving it with toasted French bread rounds, or Carr's cracked pepper water crackers.

I will be serving the dip in this crimson baker, with the crackers in this white bowl :D

Goals for 2012

Master Bath Redo

I had this as a goal last year, but we did not get around to it. This year we are going to have to address it whether we want to or not. We need to strip the wallpaper and paint. I would like a new tub, sinks, and countertops keeping the existing cabinetry.

Art Goals

I want to spend more time painting, but it has proven difficult lately because we do not have great lighting in the art studio (yet). In the summer and autumn I have plenty of light until late in the day, but not in the winter. I still cannot decide on the type of overhead lighting, but I have a few looks that I am considering. I really like these lights from Terrain:

2. We need to purchase and install some overhead lighting in the art studio.

3. I would also like to take a palette knife workshop. :D

I have some other goals that I will reveal at a later date.

Healthy Lifestyle

I have been getting in shape, and I would like to learn how to better plan and prepare healthy meals.

4. I will be taking a cooking and menu planning course this year that should be very informative and fun. I am looking forward to it!

I will be reading French Women Don't Get Fat, and The French Women Don't Get Fat Cookbook. Since my course focuses on a Mediterranean lifestyle, I think the these books will supplement the course well.

5. I plan to cook all the recipes from the books.

Literary Friday: Major Pettigrew's Last Stand

On the plane ride home, I read Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson. It is a clever comedy of manners novel, and I enjoyed it very much. I hate flying, so it made the flight (and layover) much more tolerable.

Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired) is the main character of the novel. He lives in the small English village of Edgecombe St. Mary in Sussex. He is a widower, and very honorable and chivalrous: He is the epitome of an English gentleman. He befriends Jasmina Ali, a widowed Pakistani shop owner. They become better acquainted as Jasmina gives Major Pettigrew a ride to his brother's funeral. While in her car, Major Pettigrew discovers Mrs. Ali's love for literature, and they soon find that they have much more in common other than their marital status. The two decide to meet at a later date to discuss Kipling. The major is thrilled-- he is developing quite a crush on her!

The backdrop for most of the comedic scenes is the planning and execution of a hideously-themed country club dance. The major and Mrs. Ali are asked to help with the preparations, and he declares Jasmina as his date in order to spare her feelings after a social-climbing doctor's wife attempts to embarrass her. Things take an even worse turn at the dance, and it becomes clear what the village thinks of Major Pettigrew and his relationship with Mrs. Ali. Complicating things further are Mrs. Ali's obligations to her extended family and Major Pettigrew's selfish and insipid son, Roger. Religion, tradition, values, culture, and society all conspire to impede Major Pettigrew's relationship with Mrs. Ali.

I love both Major Pettigrew and Mrs. Ali. They are smart, witty, kind, courageous, and honorable. Major Pettigrew proves his heroism by preventing a tragedy, and Mrs. Ali proves her worthiness for his love in several instances in the book. I admit that I laughed out loud a couple of times while reading Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, and I could not stop myself even on the airplane.

Happy Twelfth Night 2012

I want to thank you for your kind comments and emails. I read each one, and I will respond when I am able. I am feeling a bit better today, and I am trying the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce, and toast). So far I have handled the toast okay.

I had planned to write a few posts about our trip, but I might just write a long one this weekend. I also need to write my Literary Friday post later this evening.

Today is Twelfth Night, and we usually have a king cake party. You can see my post from last year here. Mr. Art @ Home did bring home a king cake for the kids, and some Mardi Gras colored flowers for me.

Food Poisoning

I got food poisoning Tuesday afternoon after eating at a Mexican restaurant. Mr. Art @ Home took me to the doctor this morning, and I hope the shots and prescriptions will help because I have been in so much pain that I have not been able to sleep. I have not been able to eat anything but a few Cheerios. If you have any suggestions of anything I can do to help recover from this, please share.

Mosaicwares Revisited

This is a recycled post from last February, but I have added a few new photos. Alison @ The Polo House has a new linky called Favorites on the First, and this month everyone is linking their favorite collections. I basically only collect three things: MacKenzie-Childs, books, and picture frames made from salvaged materials. But I do have a small collection of Mosaicwares I would like to share for this party since I post about books and MacKenzie-Childs often.

I adore Mosaicwares. The company manufactures "la picassiette" one of a kind home furnishings. La picassiette is a French phrase meaning "stolen from the plate." It is an art form where artists use broken bits of china, glass, figurines, and other materials and cement them onto objects to form different surfaces.

I have a little bit of this art form in my dining room.

This piece is called The Breakfast Nook. I sometimes use it in the very center of a buffet for either appetizers or desserts.

This is a candlestick.

These frames are fun, especially the heart-shaped one.

This butler's tray is a versatile piece.

I currently have it set-up as a bar for my husband. He only drinks wine, and I wish I could think of a use for the cut crystal decanters that were given to us as a wedding present.

I put all of his wine accessories, including his Laguiole wine opener, in a small berry bowl. Laguiole makes the best knives and wine openers in the world!

How I Am Spending My Day

Laundry. And *LOTS* of it.

I have unpacked, and now the fun begins. We have so much laundry that it won't fit in the laundry room, so I have sorted it all in the dining room. My family has abandoned me to this task, which is fine. I am hoping to blog hop and get the laundry done tonight before Ben's Season of The Bachelor starts tonight. The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are the only shows Mr. Art @ Home never misses. They are his guilty pleasures! :/

In spite of the laundry, it is nice to be home. We had a great vacation, but it is hard to travel with teenagers who are whining about not being able to talk/text their friends/boyfriends due to no cell service. Plus the internet was uncooperative, too, which totally compounded the problem because Skype wasn't an option, either. Oh, the horrors!!! ;P But I must admit, I was upset about the internet almost as much as the children. I have missed reading your posts and my emails; I have so much reading to catch up on today.

Since I did not get to post much during the vacation, I will write a long post about the trip at some point this week.

Literary Friday: The Sisters Brothers

Good afternoon! I am taking a quick break from skiing to write my Literary Friday post at Starbucks because their internet is faster (and there is cell phone service here, too). :D

On the flight out to Colorado, I read one of the most talked about books of 2011: The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt. I do understand the hype surrounding this book because it is so well written, and it is not your typical Western.

Eli and Charlie Sisters are hit men based out of the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, to be exact) at the peak of the Gold Rush. They have been ordered to kill Hermann Kermit Warm, a prospector who supposedly stole something from their boss, the Commodore. His last known whereabouts is his claim near Sacramento, and as the notorious and infamous Sisters Brothers set out on their mission, Eli is on his new horse named Tub. I must say that Tub is one of the most interesting characters in the book. I love Tub! Eli's interactions with Tub reveal much about his heart, and his heart is not into this particular job. Eli is one of the most endearing characters in spite of his chosen profession, and I enjoyed the story as it was told through his point of view. Eli is a bit overweight, and he does not share his brother's love for violence and brandy. He is having a bit of a midlife crisis: he is questioning his life and how he wants to spend the remainder of it. He has also made a commitment to weight loss and dental hygiene with his new toothbrush and mint flavored tooth powder.

Some of the most humorous moments in the book is their pitstop in San Francisco where the brothers are meant to rendezvous with one of the Commodore's scouts named Morris. San Francisco is booming, and prospectors are spending their gold as quickly as they can on food, lodgings, whiskey, and women. The spending has inflated prices to ridiculous heights, and everyone is wild there. Here is one of my favorite quotes from the book. It is said by a man whom Eli and Charlie have just met as they are seeing San Francisco Bay for the first time. Eli asks him what his feelings are about San Francisco this morning:

He shook his head. "Yesterday I saw a man leap from the roof of the Orient Hotel, laughing all the way to the ground, upon which he fairly exploded. He was drunk they say, but I had seen him sober shortly before this. There is a feeling here, which if it gets you, will envenom your very center. It is a madness of possibilities. That leaping man's final act was the embodiment of the collective mind of San Francisco. I understood it completely. I had a strong desire to applaud, if you want to know the truth.'

There are so many intriguing and unique characters in the book, and one of my favorites makes appearances in the book's two intermissions. She is a little girl with "the sight" and a penchant for poison. I wish there had been a third because I would like to learn more of this morbid Wednesday Addams of the Old West! The story, characters, point of view, and dark humor are certainly pluses in The Sisters Brothers, but there is definitely a negative: animal cruelty. I want to forewarn you about it before you read it. The violence did not bother me as badly because I expect violence in a Western.

Sorry about the brevity of this post, but my family is getting a bit anxious to leave Starbucks. Tomorrow I will post my Best Books of 2011 Lists. Hopefully it will be easy because I wrote them before leaving home. In the meantime, please enjoy this cheesy The Sisters Brothers book trailer.

I am keeping My Happy List short and sweet this week due to the very slow internet here at the resort. It has taken me about two hours to put together this short post including the photos. :/

My Happy List

1. Dragons and bunnies and bears....oh, my!!! Winterfest has been a blast this year in Beaver Creek. This year's theme is "Find the Penguin." There have been penguin ice sculptures, penguin disco skaters, and penguin cookies. These are the only penguins I have found...so far.... Winterfest makes everyone happy!

2. Both girls cooperated in having their picture taken...at the same time...{go.figure.} Cooperative teenagers make me very happy!

3. Drew Brees broke Dan Marino's longtime NFL passing record last night during the Saints v. Falcons game. Congratulations to Drew!!! The Saints are having an amazing season, and are headed to the playoffs, which makes Saints fans very happy! A trip to Indianapolis would make me very happy, too! :D

Literary Friday: Clockwork Prince

Cassandra Clare proves yet again why she is the very best young adult writer in this second installment of the Infernal Devices series. Clockwork Prince is one of the best books I read this year. I did not want to put it down, yet it took me two weeks to read it because I was helping Shelley study for exams.

Tessa Gray is living and training at the London Institute thanks to her help in uncovering a plot meant to devastate the Clave's ranks. She is still grieving over her brother Nate's betrayal of her to the dangerous Magister, head of the Pandemonium Club. The club's goal is the destruction of the Nephilim through an army of clockwork soldiers who will one day be animated with demon energy. Tessa still seeks answers to her true parentage and identity: it is evident that she is a warlock in spite of the fact that she bears no demon mark. It seems there are several characters who know who and what she is, yet they speak to her about it in riddles. These questions about Tessa's parentage, who and how she was made, and what she actually is are ones I want answered in the third book. I have my theories! ;P

Two of the young Shadowhunters training at the institute share Tessa's heart. Jem, the silver-haired musician who is kind and brave, and the passionate Will who pushes everyone away with his stinging quips. Both Will and Jem are cursed with heartbreaking secrets that affect every decision each makes. They are also parabatai, which means that they are partners in battle. Shadowhunters can only have one parabatai ever, and the vow lasts a lifetime. Tessa is torn for her love for both of them, and I was stunned at where her heart takes her in this installment.

There is so much to love about this book: an amazing masked ball scene; a betrayal I did not see coming; fantastic literary quotes at the beginning of every chapter not to mention numerous literary allusions throughout; Magnus Bane's awesomeness; and Cassandra Clare's attention to detail in her descriptions of Victorian London. This book also has Steampunk coolness like the first one, and even Henry enjoys the victory of a successful invention that saves the day.

I hope you will read this series. The first book, Clockwork Angel, made my Best Books of 2010 list. You can read that post here.

2011 Goals Revisited

Here are the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the year. I accomplished three out of the five. I am quite pleased, actually. You can read my original post here.

My 2011 Goals:

1. Fluffing my daughter's dorm room: check! You can read all about my daughter's dorm room here.

2. Converting our living room to an art studio: check! I am enjoying it so much, and so is Shelley! It is one of the smartest things we have done to our home. Here is a link to the post about our studio.

3. Learn how to bake brioche: epic. fail..... I did not accomplish this goal, but I must say in my defense that my doctor put me on a gluten free diet, so it seemed almost cruel to learn how to bake it.

4. Remodel our master bathroom: Not. Even. Close.... but we have not had the time this year for such a major project. Maybe it will be a goal for 2012!

5. Decoupage a large vase for our coffee table: Check! You can read about this fun project here.

I have not written any goals for 2012 yet. I have a few ideas, and I think I shall think about them next week. Do you set goals or make resolutions every year?

We Want to Know Wednesday #13

I have already posted a couple I like (you can read that post here), but my favorite Christmas carol is "O Holy Night," and my favorite secular Christmas song is this:

....so I guess I will answer number three: What are your Christmas traditions?

1. Skiing. We go skiing every year for Christmas.

2. Ornament shopping. Every year (usually Christmas Eve Eve) the girls and I go out to brunch and then shopping for one special Christmas ornament each. When the girls have homes of their own, I will pack their ornaments and send them to their new homes. I started this tradition when Shanley Belle was two years old; she bought the ugliest glass tiger ornament you have ever seen, and we are a University of Alabama family. We hate all things tigers!

3. Charity. Usually we adopt a child or family and purchase Christmas presents for them.

4. Reading. In addition to reading the Christmas story from Luke, we also enjoy reading Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory.

5. Baking. I have family favorites I enjoy baking every year, but Shanley Belle has decided that we will construct gingerbread houses every Christmas. This year was our first go at it, and you can read about it here.

Miss Angie is hosting My Happy List for Mamarazzi again this week.

My Happy List

1. Shanley Belle is home from college, and Shelley is taking her last final exam today. I am so happy, and I am so proud of my girls! Shanley Belle made all A's in her college courses this semester, and Shelley made a 93 on her Language Arts exam. We are hoping for a B on her science exam she took yesterday. Today she is taking her world history exam. If you wonder where I've been the past two weeks, I have been helping Shelley with study guides and studying. This is the first year for exams in our school system. Eighth grade is hard!

2. We are having a Christmas present exchange party today after school. Exchanging Christmas presents makes me very happy! I will post more about this tomorrow.

3. We are packed for our ski trip. Mr. Art @ Home will be shipping out skis and other ski paraphernalia today. Skiing makes me very happy! We ski every Christmas, but we did not get to go last year due to my surgery.

I hope to visit some of your blogs now that exams are over. Yay!!!

Literary Friday: Clockwork Angel

This week I have been rereading Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. It made my Best Book of 2010 list. You can read last year's post here, but I thought I would cut and paste my synopsis below:

Clockwork Angel is the first installment in Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices series, which is the prequel to her highly successful and very well-written Mortal Instruments series. Cassandra Clare is the best young adult writer today, and I am so pleased she has set a very high standard for the genre. If you have young adults in your life, you must introduce them to her series. This is definitely not your typical young adult vampire series. As a matter of fact, although it has a little bit of a gothic vibe, it has a strong Steampunk influence, and I like it!

In Clockwork Angel, New Yorker Tessa Gray must travel to Queen Victoria's London to find her missing brother. When she arrives, she is kidnapped by the creepy Dark Sisters who are members of a notorious secret society called the Pandemonium Club. Tessa soon learns that there is a parallel reality comprised of Downworlders, or supernatural beings with special abilities, gifts, and curses. The only people who protect normal humans (mundanes) from this world are the Shadowhunters: descendants of the Nephilim. Tessa quickly learns that she belongs to this otherworld, a legacy that has been hidden from her since birth. As Tessa allies with the London Institute of Shadowhunters, she meets two best friends, Will and Jem, who intrigue and frighten Tessa in different ways and for different reasons. With tutelage from the Institute, will Tessa utilize her gifts and find her brother? Perhaps one of the biggest surprises for me in this book is Magnus Bane. No spoilers here other than to say his storyline is fun.

The reason I have been rereading Clockwork Angel is because Clockwork Prince, the second book in the Infernal Devices series, was released on December 6th. I am glad I took the time to read Clockwork Angel again. This time I concentrated on Will's character and the possible source(s) of his teenage angst. Tessa is also a conundrum wrapped in a mystery, and I hope some of my questions are answered in Clockwork Prince. I began reading Clockwork Prince last night, and I cannot wait to write about it next Friday.
